Over seven years after it first told the Pentagon that it wanted 145 BAE Systems M777 ultra-light howitzer guns, India may finally be close to a deal with the US government. On August 7, the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified US Congress of the possible sale to India, with a cost pegged at $885-million.
After a bumpy and protracted ride, the Indian MoD sent the US government a Letter of Request in November last year.
I hate to say anything until an actual deal is through, but the M777s will be India’s first purchase of artillery guns since the 1986 Bofors Scam near permanently shafted all efforts since to acquire howitzers. The Army will be pleased. More details soon.

  1. whoah…885 mil for 145 guns ….that's more than 6 mil per gun and associated support equipment….damm expensive…hope this gun is worth the money..

  2. Now we must do some reverse engineering like China and make our own 155 guns. I just want to inform that Ranchi's PSU. " Heavy Engineering Corporation ( http://www.hecltd.com/) can make the turret. ( beside other ordance factories) They have that expertise but why our army is not cultivating it is another ball game all together.

  3. This will be deployed mainly in the mountainous terrain against china. Pinaka was effective during the kargil insurgency. Is 145 guns sufficient for the army ?

  4. It is the same tactics every time. Delay and bore everyone till everyone is past caring and then slip in and do your own thing,
Has anyone explained why some "Boffin Babus Indicum" a breed peculiar to India -has been sitting on the Bofors drawings for Twenty years? And as anonymous said where is that?

  5. Side by side the Army must encourage indigenous defence production e.g. the efffort of the TATAs to make an artillery gun
