Second LR-SAM Test Before November, IAF & Army Interested

The joint Israeli-Indian Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LR-SAM for India, designated Barak-8 in Israel) will undergo its first test-firing at India’s Integrated Test Range before November, if sources are to be believed. LiveFist has learnt that the LR-SAM, when inducted, will be housed in four vertical launch units (VLUs), each housing eight missiles, on each of the three Project-15A destroyers and seven Project-17A stealth frigates, i.e, each of India’s next generation warships will carry at least 32 LR-SAMs. The combat suites of both vessel classes will be built around the Elta EL/M-2248 MF-STAR.

Scientists and engineers from DRDL were in Israel for the missile’s first test flight earlier this year. The dual-pulse smokeless solid rocket motor propelled missile is being built with an effective range of 70-km and a ceiling of 16-km — that’s official. The missile’s high agility is being provided by a tungsten jet vane system for thrust vector control and a highly evolved electro-pneumatic control actuation system. Following fresh interest evinced by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army, the dual-mode guided weapon (GPS + data link for midcourse guidance / seeker for terminal homing) will be deployable on mobile launchers as well. The weapon system can engage 12 targets with 24 missiles.

  1. Excellent! One thing that the Indian Navy's always lagged behind in is Aegis-type radars and SAM systems. Although we're not quite there yet(range and altitude needs further improvement to match the Aster-30 and SM-2 LR-SAMs) this is a good first step.

However I am apprehensive about exactly how much of this 'joint' development is Indian. The thrust vector control system sounds far too advanced for our institutions' current level of expertise, and no doubt a good part of the guidance system is also Israeli. Even the radar is Israeli. What did DRDO contribute then?

  2. Shiv , does this missile has capable to defend from DF-21 , and it is said to be Lockheed martin is in talks for its aegis system for our 7 nos frigate(P 17A) .

  3. IIRC, Aster 30 is a 30 km range system so hows it better (in range) than LR SAM?

Also Aster 30 has had only 1 test (sucessful) so far. Again LR SAM, in its development phase is ahead of Aster 30.

    Anyone?

  4. Friends you ask me about the contribution of DRDO? I have personally been a part of LRSAM development in India. It is one hell of a missile. Israel and India both started working together in this project from scratch. So no way any one can say that it is a mere copy. All the way Indian farms have preceded Israeli counterparts in speed and quality. It was us who completed the first sets. But as per agreements the initial production was bought by Israel. I can assure we are soon going to be strengthened by this new arrow in our quiver.
