I think the Govt needs to be proactive and take up for Navy. The statements on this incident should come from Def ministry and not Navy henceforth.
Under no circumstances should the Navy be put under scanner.. they did what was right at the time.
The Government needs to take up responsibility as Tabar was sent on the directive of GOI only.
Also how about investigations? Strange that the id of the destroyed ship is still not certain after such a long time. Are’nt there any standard navy procedures!! You cant just destroy a ship and move on!!

Most probably this was a joint venture of pirates active in Malacca straits and those in Somalia
Indian Navy has come across many thai trawlers sometimes poaching in Indian waters and at other times involved in gun running for LTTE

Regarding the Thai trawler story, two issues stand out:
1. Apparently, the Indian Navy is not directly plugged into the International Maritime Bureau’s piracy reporting centre. I guess, if this report is true, and the indications are that is, then the Indian Navy may want to rectify to avoid such incidents in the future. The reports also say that one of the Royal (British) Navy’s ships did approach the Thai trawler before the INS Tabar but withdrew once it found that pirates had already taken over the trawler.
2. I wish the Indian Navy would not be so defensive. There is nothing wrong in acknowledging a mistake. Armed forces all over the world have made such – and even greater – errors. The US Navy even shot down an Iranian civilian plane in 1988.
However, what do we see? Instead of saying that we will check to see what really happened, the Navy’s first instinct – like the whole of our government – is to deny that it could have even made an error. And when that becomes untenable, it starts saying that the “behavior” of the trawler was to all intents and purposes like that of a “pirate ship.” This may be true but it amounts to a tacit acknowledgment that the Thai company is correct. The end result is that the Indian Navy looks silly.

2. Why not a fishing trawler stop when a modern frigate asks it to? Were they thinking Indian Navy wants to eat up all their fiah?
3. Why must a fishing trawler attack a navy frigate?
4. Why must fishermen threaten to sink a navy frigate?
5. Why did Indian navy men see black men with RPGs and guns on board the ship? Are Thai men black? Do they fish with lethal weapons?

Any fishermen going into international waters should know the flag of India, especially on the Indian ocean. They usually have a guide book with them. Even so, is it had to mistake a pirate vessel to a 5000 tonne navy frigate with uniformed men on the deck?
9. After being pounded once, why didn’t they shoot their flares or raise a white flag? All ships in international waters should have these 2 things.
10. It is established beyond doubt that that was a pirate vessel. By not stopping when asked by the Indian navy and not following international protocol when confromted clearly shows something fishy.
SO, it was not a fishing trawler. It was a FISHY trawler.
At least India has the guts to go out and help take charge of a bad situation, not sit down and await IMF loan to backfill a sinking economy and shut a childish, mad and Mr, 10% president (who dreams of Palin after losing his wife) up from talking anymore things that will damage your crumbling country.

1. The distance between Thailand and Somalia is 6,207.15 km.
2. Speed of a Commercial Fishing Trawler with displacement hull- not more that 12 knots.
3. No of crew a Trawler has – usually single crew, in some cases double.
4. Distance a commercial fishing trawlers can cover without refuelling or having extra fuel tanks – 5,000 km.
5. Exclusive fishing zone for a country – 320 kms.
So you can infer what a Thai fishing ship was doing near the cost of somalia. Definitely not fishing. I bet it was smuggling weapons or narcotics in Somalia. Either it was captured by the opponent pirates or the pirates on board were the ones the goods were intended to be delivered.
