India’s Aircraft Carrier Reveals Itself

Was just sent this photo of India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC), which was floated out in December from its dry dock. The float out took place about 2.5 years after the ship’s keel was laid at Kochi.

  1. It doesn't look like an Aircraft Carrier…looking some kind of cargo ship…anyways anything ingenious, I would be proud of it….
    JAI HIND…

  2. Looks like good progress. But a lot remains to be finished. Shiv, Would love to see you do a report on the IAC, about its progress and capabilities.

  3. The front of aircraft carrier is facing towards the camera, that is why some people might be getting confused regarding the shape.

  4. I find it really strange that some of the experts on this site with expert comments on aircraft carriers and general expert opinion on defence matters choose to be anonymous..are they ashamed of their own childish opinions that they need to hide behind the anonymous curtain..or are they very shy?
Come on guys please be sporting and reveal yourself like the IAC has done on Shiv's post. The world need to know ur identity in order to acknowledge the depth of your knowledge. Cheers..this aside, thanks for sharing this pic Shiv, wishing continued strength and vigour to the Indian defence forces.

  5. Awesome ..It is big and looks like its 6-7 stories high … after it finishes it will look much better ..with new paint 😀

  6. It looks like the front of the ship is in the right half of the picture. I guess, what's missing at this point is the ramp (or ski jump), once installed the hole in the front will be covered-up to support that structure. Looks good, but it also looks tiny… may be it's the picture and the fact taht some larger parts like the ski jump are to be added. Not bad at all for a first attempt; Skills and quality will only grow from here. Great Job by the folks at Kochi.

  7. One question to all defense gurus in this forum. Why are we going for an old carrier from Russia when we have the capability to build new carriers in India? We definitely have at least two shipyards capable of building medium size carrier ships.

In other words what advantage gorshavic has when compared to our indigenous ship?

  8. @138
how different are aircraft carriers from cargo ships…a lot of open flat areas(atleast from afar they look flat)…of course on the cargo ship the bridge is not along the length of the ship

  9. Not a bad start after all. Considering we are building Air-craft carrier for the first time. But we should also take help from the private dockyards like LNT or ABG. They can built some parts, CSL. can builds some parts. and the final assembly is at Cochin.

  10. This is really impressive. It is more complete than I thought. This will be a very nice addition to the navy when inducted.

    Cujo

  11. The floated part of the IAC looks impressive considering the fact that it is a first attempt at building a big aircraft carrier locally.

If modular construction methods are employed roping in other big capacity private shipyards such as L&T or ABG, major parts coulod be built separately and assembled at CSL. This would shorten the overall time. In could even start building its 2nd carrier.

Anyway what appears in the photograph is not bad for about 2 years' work since it is the first attempt at building an aircraft carrier indigenously.

  12. IAC is neither a toy nor look like a cargo ship .Its Magnificent even when its half completed.
IF anybody have any doubt about IAC please Stand on Venduruthy Bridge(cochin) and view it for Yourself.
I had seen It,And I am really proud Of India

  13. why contemporary technology, when the nuclear power plant for arihant is ready? we could have made an IAC version of the reactor and posses a stronger, meaner fighting machine.

  14. The hull reminds me of some LHDs like the French Mistral-class, whose basic design of the lower part of the hull is based on the design of commercial ships. But is it also the case of the IAC-1??
Some papers (Indian Express…) report that there has been issues on the transmission system. Quite strange, I thought that the shipyard bought the design to the Italians.
Anyway, it will certainly be a beautiful ship and a real step forward for the Indian shipbuilding industry!

  15. There is no way this ship will be ready by 2015. More like 2020. Just look at it. Even the hull is unfinished from front, rear and top. The insides look empty and the island and deck structures are yet to be installed.

I've had misgivings about this programme ever since it was awarded to Cochin Shipyard Ltd. Although India's largest shipyard in terms of size it is a Socialist monopoly in the heart of Commie Kerala.

This project would have been quicker and more efficient in the hands of Bharti or ABG Shipyards. But AK Antony with his shining red Keralan Commie skull would never end the PSU shipyards' monopoly over navy orders until he died.

  16. @Anonymous 1:01 AM

Get the FK off you BTD. Only negativity and tell us how many aircraft carriers you & your dad has built..

  17. This is a step in the right direction, delays or no delays. What honour and pride for India to tell the world that this was, 'Made in India'.

15 yrs back I would have not dreamt that the Navy would move to Blue water capabilities. And here we are, state of the art Frigates, new Nuclear submarine, a Carrier to be inducted in 2012 with supersonic fighters and the P-8I.

    Way to go!

  18. I am seeing this for last one year floated right there; nothing is happening; no progress for last one year!! They are delaying the project to make sure that it's a failure, just like Kaveri Engine ( I should say the entire Tejas is a flop; it's more like a trainer than a multirole fighter jet), like Dhruv Helicopter. Eventhough, I am an Indian, really sad to see the red tapism and corruption involved in decision making. Don't make the same mistake in 2014.
