  1. India must hold the world record of MORE pilots having died in peace time than at war! Lucky this pilot did not make an extra stats.

  2. I wont blame it to the aircraft…come on…how long will they keep our pilots at risk..
The time has surpassed to give farewell to one of the best aircrafts of its times.

  3. Either our IAF can keep flying these vintage aircrafts and wait to go through the complex buying process for foreign equipment or adopt the HAL Tejas and build on that aircraft.

  4. Hang the chaps, upgrading and overhauling them at HAL. No point blaming the pilots and machines. Very sad. Get well soon Arnav.

  5. salute to brave Flight Lieutenant Arnav Ghosh for saving lifes of many civilians of Rajpura town from that ill fated MIG.

  6. Mig-21s must have finished the WW1 and WW2 in few sorties. However it is unfortunate that this erstwhile superior aircraft is being asked to enter in to the WW3.

Every time a Mig-21 crashes, we have to reiterate that India should have purchased 50-100 Mirages in year 2000 or now the MMRCA procurement or Tejas production is to be expedited. Since nothing else can be done so we have to painfully bear it till then.

  7. Remedy is very, very simple. Instead of keep putting Tejas through thousand of tests, long drawn IOC and then FOC start Inducting them NOW.

How come our bigwigs remain perfectly calm even if foreign crafts keeps crashing but even an chance of tiny flaw in our idigenous aircraft keeps them delaying it?

Acc. to wiki Tejas has flown over 1600 times without an single prob. What else do you need. Please mass induct Tejas.

  8. As long as the pilots eject safely, maybe this is a good way to deplete our inventory of these crash prone aircraft and force the govt to fast track the procurement of better replacements. The chronic and hopelessly lethargic pace of any procurement unfortunately leads me to think in this manner.

  9. is it technical fault or… is it related to airframe… how many hours did it log… after the upgrade… from what standard it was put to bison status…

  10. The problem lies with the slo-mo raksha mantri. Why in the world would we keep flying the Mig-21s until 2017. Let us fast track the MMRCA and Tejas acquisition and induction ASAP. I would give the Tejas production to a private group. Why is HAL trying to hurt Indian defence preparedness by monopolising all aircraft production.

I was shocked to learn that HAL would also be producing the ab-initio trainers. When are we going to learn that the best industrial innovation, R&D, and productivity can only happen in private sector.

In addition, India should have bought all the Mirage 2005s available for sale from the UAE and Greece as a stop gap measure. They are in excellent condition.

Bring back Pranab Mukherjee as rakish mantri, if you need fast decisions and results.

Is some one keeping tabs on who worked on the jet before its crash? What was the pilot's training before he was given to fly an unforgiving jet like Mig 21. Mig-21 has outlived its utility. However, we must admit that the maximum number of Migs have crashed in India. Is it poor parts, poor training of pilots, or poor training of maintainers? Does inadequate training leads to pre-mature "punching out"? Some one got to find these answers. Follow me on Twitter @deepak_datta and leave comments here and there.

  11. Some blogger mentioned that the government delay in MMRCA nod is due to who is going to give more "prasad." I do not believe that to be the case, at least I hope not. It is mainly due to the the ineptness of the Defence Minister AK Anthony! who simply does not understand the urgency, he is in the same mind set as V.K. Krishna Menon who was A.K. anthony's compatriot from Kerala. As a defence minister of India, he misled Nehruji and the nation on the preparedness, and most importantly, the capabilities, of Indian defence forces. Instead of preparing the armed forces to defend the nation, he was busy creating "Sainik Schools."

VK Krishna Menon was single-handedly responsible for India's tilt away from US, in spite of her being the oldest democracy in the world with a pro-India stance. President Harry Truman even broke with the protocol to greet Pandit. Jawaharlal Nehru personally at the airport at Washington National Airport on October 31, 1949. A first by any US president to greet a head of any foreign government. His other "plaudits" include advising Nehruji to take the Kashmir issue to the UN, advising him that Indian forces were adequately prepared, advising Nehruji not to use the airforce against the massive invasion forces of Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai-China.

Should I say any more. Oh yes, one more important "achievement" of his includes giving the longest speech in front of the UN Security Council on January 23, 1957 and January 24, 1957, the transcript runs into 160 pages. It is the longest speech ever recorded. Long speeches have only be given by dictators like Joseph Stalin, Fidel Castro, and ousted Libyan dictator Muammar Ghadafi, and not by a representative of a democratic nation.

AK Anthony would simply not make decisions vital for the country's defence. Be it MMRCA, Artillery acquisitions, mechanizing the ground forces for a NBC threat environment, or it is about signing vital agreements like CISMOA, BECA, or the LCA. He simply does not get it.

India's Railway Minister Shri. Lal Bahadur Shastri resigned as a result of a railway accident in 1956 that killed 144 people in Tamilnadu. He set a high bar for the politicians. But not AK Anthony. Under his watch, 26/11 terrorists crossed into India from Pakistan, yet again recently a 1100 tonne tanker showed up on Juhu beach, earlier this year, passing the Navy, Coast guard etc., both under Anthony's watch. In both the cases Anthony refused to take any moral responsibility by resigning. No action was taken against any naval officer(s) for dereliction of duty. That is Anthony's clout. Even his role in the congress party's core committee is said to have caused incoherent policy decisions regarding handling of Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazare mess.

  12. yeaaaaaaah another one bites the dust!

the fewer of these there are, the safer the country!

im happy that this plane crashed AND the pilot is safe.

  13. another one bites the dust. atleast the pilot is safe. the politicians don't want to buy new aircraft. they want to refurbish aircraft like the mirage for 50 million dollars a piece instead for buying something like the gripen for about the same price. they also don't want indigenous aircraft like the tejas. indigenous aircraft make it very difficult to eat money especially for politicians. only people who can eat money in them is contractors, sub-contractors and so on. people like ysr and ysjagan, who declared less than 20 crore when the father was running for election 5 years ago, suddenly declared 300 plus crore a few months ago when the son ran for election. that is only tip of the iceberg as their net worth is rumored 100,000 crore.

  14. Why everyone are surprised seeing this?. You dont know??…

Defence Ministry and IAF had recently came up along a plan to destroy all the obsolete and junk stuff by this way.

They accepted this plan becoz of the heartening fact that there is no place left in bases to store new Tejas jets and later inducting MMRCA's and FGFA's.

Other than that the main reason is environmental pollution caused by IAF's these aircrafts. They thought rather than lying waste and filling space in bases, it is beter to destroy this stuff somewhere or in poor farmers land so that they wont losse their money in pockets.

Well understood everybody…We can see other crashes soon…Lets enjoy these crashes..Comeon …yaaaaaa..comeon… Enjoyyyyy…..Hurrayyyyy….yaaa

  15. The GOI and the MOD with St. Anthony at its helm do not seem to have any sense of urgency. Force numbers are depleting very fast while our enemies are augmenting to their force level even with untested aircrafts such as J10.

By all counts we have a Mig21++ aircraft in the Tejas Mk1 and yet IAF does not want them to replace the Mig 21s. They do not mind waiting for a super-duper foreign aircraft while our poor pilots die in their flying coffins.

As usual St. Anthony is interested more in keeping his image intact as Mr.Clean and would not do anything on a fast-track basis, be it aircrafts, artillary, submarines, etc. The babus at MOD play along showing their greedy nature, hoping for kickbacks through their forign lobbyist and vendors.

What India needs to wake up from its lethargic slumber is for the Pakis and the Chinks to stage another 1962. Then and only then these clueless and retroactive leaders would do something to defend the country. By then we might lose big chunks of the country to our enemies to be held as bargaining chips. Foreign territories held after a war becomes a part of the victor's country. All those Indian territories held by the Chinks are still with them and have become non-negotiable.

Only politicians are too magnanimous and return territories won through the blood and sweat of the jawans because they want to score brownie points in the international arena.

What India needs are young, proactive, dynamic, patriotic and visionary leaders to propel it to be among the best.

Looking forward to that day! Would it come during our time? Your guess is as good as mine.

  16. Hai Friends read this

Russian fighter jet crashes in Urals
    MOSCOW, September 6 (RIA Novosti)

A Russian Mikoyan MiG-31 fighter jet crashed in the Urals on Tuesday, killing both pilots, officials say.

  17. India should go in for not just 126 aircraft as part of MMRCA but 200 + and start phasing out the Mig 21.
The lives of the pilots are very precious.

  18. @ShivAroor I have an humble suggestion. Conduct an poll on 'Shall IAF fast track the induction of Tejas'. It has gone through sooooo many tests that it can be easily inducted.

  19. yet another mig21 crashes…

at this rate, I don't think any will be left to actually be given a farewell, come its long due retirement…

  20. Hi Shiv,

I have watched you on Headline Today many times as defence correspondent and I liked them .

Why don't you persude your News Channel create a short half hour Defence and Security news special weekly …. maybe you could discuss the current state of the army , navy and IAF which badly need new weapons and aircrafts, spares etc. Also focussing on terror and security issues inside India, global security and terror networks worldwide … maybe watching such specially dedicated news programme weekly will bring to light how badly India needs to tackle the situations as we live in a hostile neighbourhood with nuclear weapons threats to our country.

Maybe such dedicated news every week will make the GOVERMENT TO SPEED UP THE PROCESS OF PROCURRING DEFENCE CONTRACTS WITHOUT DELAYS.
Also our security agenicies would get alerted and get trained better.

Oh yes !!! sad about the MiG crash , the pilot was luckly to escape ….

  21. Our government is so stupid that they will continue to fly pilots on this Soviet museum piece than buy more LCAs made in India!

The cost to train a pilot is FAR FAR greater than the cost of this Mig-21 even if it is sold in the "antique" market! The benefit to our own defense industry if we were to even begin to replace the existing Migs with even Mark 1 LCAs is ENORMOUS not to mention the cost of saving so many young IAF officers lives, a cost that is incalculable!

Yet we continue to roll the dice on this Mig-21 and basically send our pilots on Kamakazi flights risking people on the ground, the lives of the pilots and the reputation of the Indian Airforce apart from the tens of millions in losses to the Indian taxpayer in terms of the costs of training, maintaining and fuel for the Mig 21 and the pilots.
