Russia’s ITAR-TASS news agency reports that the K-152 Nerpa Akula-II class nuclear-powered submarine was handed over to the Indian Navy on Saturday at the Bolshoi Kamen shipbuilding facility in the East. The navy, which will call it INS Chakra, will operate the submarine on a ten year lease, and ostensibly use it as a test platform to train crews in operating a nuclear submarine. The ITAR-TASS report says the Nerpa will sail for India in January. It’s home base will be Visakhapatnam.

Great going.
Mother India.
atleast six such subs are required for our navy.
Is there a provision to extend the lease period after completion of 10 years?
Is this not bound by any clause as not to use it in any military offensive during the lease period ?
4th quarter of 2011 was a blast for all military jingos…!!!
LOL
Now if they can just bring it back to the Indian Ocean without any incident that would be a good omen!
With the recent spurt of accidents involving Russian nuclear subs and the kind of stigma attacked to the Nerpa as it is, we'll just have to cross our fingers and hope for the best.
Akula will be the most quietest submarine in this region.
I wonder if we have now joined yet another elite club of countries of indegenious genious that is beyond comprehension of a simpleton's mind.
Cujo
It is a good news.
beware of saboteurs!!!!
Superb ! I hope we have at least 3 SSBN and 9 SSN ( 3 each for the naval commands ) and 30 conventional submarines.
This sub has been degraded in features before handing it over to the Indian Navy. The noise levels have been intentionally increased, the long-range missiles replaced with short-range ones, 4 of the 10 torpedo tubes blocked and amount of fuel in reactor reduced such that the submarine can only be used for 60-80 days per year.
Indeed it won't be useful for anything more than training role.
nice…
nice…
@Anon 7:27: Under the ATV program, atleast 5 arihant class N- subs are already under various stages of construction and planned to be inducted by 2020..
It is just what the doctors ordered now waiting for the Arihant 1 & 2 to join the Chakra. Not to mention the tremendous technological know how it is brining along with it.
Happy new year shiv, keep up the good work
Happy New Year Shiv, Keep up the great work, i hope this year brings in lots of new inductions, expeditious decision making and less procrastinating on issues of core concern to our defence forces and our nation as a whole.. Happy New Year 2012. Cheers!!!!
Shiv, Happy new year to you and your family.
Gud news….eagerly waiting for our indiginious nuc sub arihant 1.
Good, better late than never. We may recall that our Navy successfully operated one nuclear SM on lease from erstwhile USSR for three years, from 1988 to 1990. We are capable and guys having LOL will be proved wrong. I can vouch for it.
