“Enemy” Prithvi Failed, Interceptor Smartly Self-Aborted, Says DRDO

Here’s the statement from DRDO about today’s abortive AAD test: The flight test under Programme AD was planned to be conducted on 15 Mar 2010 to demonstrate the interception of Tactical Ballistic Missile in endo-atmospheric region. As part of the mission, a target missile mimicking the incoming ballistic missile in terms of altitude and speed, was launched from ITR, Chandipur on 15 Mar 2010 at around 1010 hrs.

The target missile took off in normal way; at T+20 sec (approx) the target deviated due to some onboard system malfunction and could not maintain the intended trajectory, failing to attain the desired altitude profile. The Mission Control Centre computer found that the interception is not warranted as the deviated target did not present the incoming missile threat scenario and accordingly the system intelligently did not allow take-off of the interceptor missile for engaging the target. The cause of the target malfunction is being investigated by analysis of tele-metered data.

  1. DRDO Con getting sophesticated day by day.

So If the target missile deviate from expected profile, the AAD fails/aborts??

Funny, how sugar coated lies are accepted, Nithyananda… you have serious competition.

  2. Most of the news which i heard is interceptor( AAD) failed , now its cleared the enemy missile(but that too is india made prithvi missile ) has problem not with AAD .

  3. @Anon @11.33 PM..

Imagine.. Pak missile fired to impact Delhi.. it deviates n falls into gurgaon … 😀 😉 …

    Nw what??

  4. Failures are the stepping stones to success ….. and when we have returned back to the Stone Age (courtesey ou neighbours) ….we shall rise again !

    Jai Bharat !

  5. well well well drdo finally found the right man for press release. Still it is a shame why a proven missile should fail. They say failure is a stepping stone

The Pakistani idiot Buraidiah/Aliph Ahmed posting as anon@7:41 pm needs to brush up on their trolling skills..

Hey Aliph, even Defence Talk kicked you out for being a troll …must really suck when a Pakistani forum with a Pakistani webadmin thinks you are worthless mushriq.

For the rest of the sane, Indian posters.

The ABM system behaved exactly as it is designed to. The MCC – Mission Control Center monitors the trajectory of the enemy missile and decides whether it is to be intercepted or not. Once it clears the decision, it will allocate the right battery, and even the launcher. Once the missile is fired, the MCC then allocates the next two missiles for a salvo of three missiles, as the ABM system follows the principle of shoot, shoot, shoot, not shoot, wait and shoot, given the time available in the Indo-Pak context with terminal interception.

In this case, the system worked as designed. The LRTR inputs to the MCC clearly indicated that the target was not a threat, and the MCC held off the shoot orders to the AAD. Thats what it is designed for.

Otherwise, all the opponent has to do – even one as witless as Pakistan- is to fire off all its older Chinese junk and have the Indian ABM system expend all its missiles for no use.

And no, this does not reflect on the performance of the Prithvi either. This is a special modified version using the baseline Prithvi intended to mimic the profile of a 1500-2000km class IRBM (all those Chinese missiles imported by Pak and given a green "Pindigenous" paint job) and as such failures are to be expected from one off samples. As a case in comparison, compare:

In September 2008 the IDF attempted a test of actual Arrow 2 block-4 missile against the "Blue Sparrow". The drill had to be aborted, however, when the target missile malfunctioned shortly after launch.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow_%28missile%29#Arrow_2

At the end of the day, for a program of such complexity, the occasional failure is to be expected.

After all, this is a normal country we are talking of, unlike the great country of Pakistan, where nothing ever fails – yet F-16s hit pigs on the runway, where the Army is the most perfect in the entire world – yet gets its a$$ handed to it in its own HQ by the Taliban, and whose economy is the most advanced in the world – and each time around, they have to beg to their Arab masters in Saudi for baksheesh.

  7. What a bunch of kiddish comments!
Launch a missile for a heck even if the target missile is no where in the threat bubble?

So what is the big deal if target missile deviates? The system responded as how it should have. Get another target missile and test once again.
What is the fuss? The threat to my nation's defence is no external but Indians who no sense of reality.

  8. Frankly, I think that this is good news. The system was able to distinguish threat-missile from non-threat missile. If the system is incapable of doing this, then the system can be overwelmed.

  9. They couldn't compensate for the changed trajectory of the target missile? China already has Anti-Ship Ballistic missiles that can change trajectory mid-flight (in order to hit moving ships), all they have to do is replace their current ballistic missiles with a land attack version of their ASBMs, and this Indian missile shield would be next to useless.

  10. But why should "Enemy" missile be perfect in order for AAD to engage it and defend us from it ? It is definitely possible that enemy missile may be built with poor quality control and not follow the textbook parabolic trajectory for some malfunction issues. So enemy misille may not be reaching intended target due to malfunction but STILL you need to defend by knocking it down.

  12. Personally I wouldn't read too much into the different version of the news dished out by DRDO or its bashers.

Failures are quite common even among the top missile producing countries in the world. Just google and see how many times the Patriot system failed. That did not mean Uncle Sam just gave up. In fact failures are the stepping stones on which more advanced and accurate systems are launched.

Let the scientists responsible find out the causes for the malfunction and rectify them so that India need not rely on foreign missile defence shields.

  13. i don't know what to say….we have a bunch of these "enemy" missiles in our armed forces to "strike" the other side. you are telling me that we have an unreliable system acting as a deterent?? i call BS on DRDO….we need to have private players in the defence development industry. DRDO has got no consequences to bear if shit like this happens.

  14. arun viswanathan ! after all our borders to porkis are less than 100 km in some areas. how about BMD in that case?

  15. Yeah why should enemy missile be perfect? AAD should be able to hit a missile targeted towards Delhi even if it is heading towards Beijing right? Use your freakin heads guys!

  16. What a great achievement from DRDO. The prithvi which is developed more than a decade ago is still failing. Only God saves our country.

  17. to anons at 11.52 and 12.03
You guys need to understand that the BMD is to protect an area of certain radius only. If the MCC decides that the enemy missile is going to hit outside of its bubble, it will not waste a valuable missile against it. This is what happened in the test, the target Prithvis trajectory was outside of the protection bubble.

In a practical scenario, if BMD is supposed to protect mumbai and detects the enemy missile is going to hit Pune, it is not going to react. So yea, Pune will be screwed and mumbai will be safe, but thats the whole point of defining which are your high value assets which have to be protected against all odds. If pune is destroyed, the harm to India will not be as much as if Mumbai is destroyed.

  18. ABM systems are meant to protect a certain fixed envelope..this depends on the missile range and radar coverage.Anything outside that as what happened here when the target missile went haywire will not be tracked or intercepted. How difficult is that to understand.

  19. For missile defence testing, US reports failures, Israel reports failures, Russia reports failures, India reports failures. Does it not come as a surprise china never seems to have a failure while developing its own missile defence? Something is fishy with china.

  20. Target missle deviated from the path. instead of targeting location x it fall on location y. Still the AAD should be smart enough to handle such scenario. It is total bullshit. Moreover this proves that earlier tests were just eyewash.

  21. if u look at the bright side this test would save thousand of $ for india, well half the pakis misssle won't reach stratosphere when fired (chinese mal par guarantee nahi milte), by mistake drdo tested most real time war scenario, differentiating between kaput missile and a missile tht will actually cross the border.take a chill pill guys shit happens. XD

  22. So our defense is resting in hope that enemy missiles (US, Chinese, Pakistani) are as defective as DRDO made desi ones.

Good job DRDO, we feel very safe now.

  23. DRDO should just be wound up. Else we're just waiting for the day that someone drops a bucket of sunshine on us, and they tell us that the missile unexpectedly turned 35 degs west, and so their !@^*&! air defence system was unable to adjust. Silly of us to expect such sophistication from what is apparently a lollipop with some missile masala at the end of it.

Send these so called scientists home, please. They are of no use to this nation, other than doing petty intrigues to sell 35 year old design dud Arjun tanks against the armys will, to the only customer who can be forced to buy it: The Indian Army.

  24. This test itself was a grand success. The target Prithvi missile accurately mimicked the trajectory of the Pakistani missiles.

50% of the green painted ding dongs and Emm series with the pakisatan armed forces can be safely expected to land a few kilometers from the launch point.

In fact the Indian armed forces can safely plan for 50% savings on missile defences based on the facts on the ground.

  25. Come on brothers,
The AAD did not repond as the deviated target did not present the incoming missile threat scenario it means that the "enemy missile has deviated from its trajectory and is not going to enter indian territory and will not touch any part of India"
THAT MEANS THE SYSTEM INTELLEGENTLY CALCULATED THE THREAT AND DID NOT FIRE THE INTERCEPTOR.
IT SAVES LOT OF MONEY MAN

  26. Target missile didnt follow its trajectory. The Intercept system decided that it was outside its area of protection. It aborted the intercept.

What is so darn complicated about the whole thing? Why do we have so many guys crying their hearts out?

If the Mumbai air defence bubble finds that a missile is aimed at Pune, then the Pune AD system will tackle it, NOT the Mumbai one. Or would you want all the AD systems ranging from Mumbai, to Pune to Jamnagar to shoot off interception missiles?

You guys must be throwing away your cars if you ever get a flat tire!!

  27. shiv…bad reporting is what i would call this….you should have made it clear to the people ready to bash DRDO at the drop of the hat that the target missile did not present a threat to the area supposed to be guarded and hence the interceptor was not fired!!

  28. The enemy prithiv failing is not a big deal. All mechanical systems with electronic interfaces do fail occaisonally. Look at the multiple instances of the tomahowk failure during the gulf war. Or the space shuttle failure, even though it is monitored so well during launches. Thats why you build them in numbers.

  29. just take what the DRDO says with a ton of salt! for those who have seen them at work , its just another failure, nothing more.

  30. missile tech is complicated and india has almost mastered it, i feel sorry for the others who live on others rejected technology. take for eg their tanks… the rejected chinese technology they now call Al-Khota or something like that…..
