Brawl Could Wind Up Indian Army Artillery Unit

The Indian Army’s 226 Field Regiment, which operates 105mm field guns in the high altitudes of Eastern Ladakh could be disbanded in the wake of a violent clash between officers and men during a field firing exercise at the Mahe range near Nyoma in the Himalayas on May 10. Commanding Officer of the unit, Colonel Prasad Kadam is understood to have suffered multiple fractures in the brawl that involved soldiers and unit officers while deployed at the Mahe field firing range outside Nyoma. As the Army fast-tracks its court of inquiry into the incident, Colonel Yatinder Nandal now officiates as CO, while Kadam’s predecessor, Colonel Yogi Sheoran is reported to have been rushed in leverage the good relations he had with unit men to assuage tensions. Word is that the unit is likely to be disbanded, with several personnel almost certain to face courts martial.

The soldier who was assaulted is Sepoy Suman Ghosh. The Major-rank officers who are understood to have been involved in the brawl are Majors A.K. Sharma, Ameya D. Kanade, Kapil Malik, Thomas Varghese and Ankur Tewari. Maj Sharma is being treated for injuries, though it is not clear if the others required treatment as well.

  1. clearly its the work of the government to malign the image of gen.vk singh. govt. is trying to upset general in every possible way as his retirement day is nearing.

  2. This is a classic case of how we go off on a tangent. Sahyaks CSD etc to describe a pure case of Comd failure. The causes of ths comd failure are deep rooted and mainly due to bad cadre management thanks to MoD Babu interference, a weak kneed RM and our impotent Generals who have ensured that Army Offrs are Dalits in the Govt of India. Dont expect classy behaviour from people you treat like pariahs. Soon the pariahs will bite if not given their rightful dues. NOW wait for next weeks issues of India Today and such like Porn Magazines. Sandeep Unnithan, Raj Chengappa and their band of bitchy journos will have a field day going gung ho on their keybds churning out spice using their limited acerbic MoD sponsored vocabulary of Colonial, sahayaks, CSD rebellion, mutinous etc. Even a prostitute will have more professional ethics as compared to Raj Chengappa and Sandeep. But alas this is how they sing for their daily bread
So watch out for the next issues – even Sunny Leone may never had so much spice wriiten on her.

  3. And we trust people like these to protect us from China and Pak. The news is out the unit is disbanded hope this does not spread to the reset of the forces

  7. Shiv has been a defence journalist for long enough to know that Medium Artillery Regiments do not hold 105mm guns any longer.

  8. Somewhere, there seems to be a common connect if you compare this incident with another,at Bangalore international aviation show, where the Americans left in a hurry without waiting for the ceremony to officially close down, as there seemed to be a collapse of internationally followed ethos…Families picnicking under displayed aircraft crossing barricades, where no civilians are allowed…Here, Army officers/majors wives at a firing practice range…clearly the armed forces seem cutoff socially from the existing India…and then these incidents highlight how they are trying to survive in their own world.

  9. Its easy for people to question the army's competence without understanding their stressful work conditions. Usually the biggest issue of contention is solder's leave. Everybody needs it but usually the unit is already stretched for manpower. Often the CO has to restrain people from taking leave and even cancel sanctioned leave. People need to be kept deployed in dangerous situations because replacements are rarely available on time. Officers taking such decisions often have to deal with flared tempers. The fact that everyone has access to weapons makes every argument a potential deadly flash point. Incidents like these do happen every now and then.In the past they rarely got reported in media.

  10. @Anon 9.13 PM

Mate today everybody works under stressful conditions. Dangerous situations are only during war or if you have been posted where there is insurgency which btw happens to be confined to few regions of the country. Hence excuses put forward by you does not holds good. Fact is the quality of our armed forces have come down. It's high time for a major overhaul of the entire system.

  11. boy oh boy..

are you moderating the comments or censoring..
    make up your mind..

a blog will never take-off like this..

where is my comment on the generalship and pleasure-travel ?

  12. For anyone who knows and has been in the army, it is not the haloed as it is thought to be. Like any other has it has its more than fair share of problems. It is only now that things are coming out. Only the bearer knows where the shoe pinches.

Just as you have poor politicians and parliamentarians, so have you very poor army officers who have no business of being there. In an operational environment, half of these so called officer cadre would get shot and a good portion of the rest possible freeze when the first shot got fired.

  13. The military like our society has been under stress due to changing of values. This incident has been in the public glare but such incidents are not rare. But hoe to prevent them is the key question.
Military must have a bigger say in all strategic and ops issues and bureaucracy must not interfere. Better pay parity for Military and better service conditions for Jawans and officer selection must be very strict. Treat our soldier with respect and you can gain peace in the borders. Disbanding this unit and punishing the guilty in this matter is paramount.

  14. "Dangerous situations are only during war": clearly, someone who has never been associated with any sort of uniformed life in any capacity whatever. The stressful situation that the average office going public is far, far removed from the stress levels of everyday life in the services. Ever had to take responsibility not just for someone's paycheck but for someone's life? Try ordering your office chaprasi that you expect him to report to work at 4:00 AM and stay alert for 18 hours at a time. Chances are that the guy will be looking to change bosses very soon. Personnel management is a tricky business at the best of times even when you're just pushing a commercial product or trying to run a corporate office. Try doing that when your mission is the nation's security. A breakdown of discipline in the army is fatal and needs to be addressed rightaway. The Indian army is over-deployed and under-rested.

  15. In the armed forces The officer's wives also had a role to play. For most to behave like an officer's wife and not like a power crazed demanding respect from the jawans types. Hopefully the powers that have taken the higher offices of the army will not make scape goats out of the jawans
Field Marshall Maneckshaw had once commented that he wants his officer's wives to behave like one and not that like an 'aayah' who has gained some mileage due to her husband's uniform. So true

  16. What can be said of Jawans & Majors, when the Army Chief is himself in brawl with Govt, over age issue. Likewise several generals (serving & retd) are in brawls over kickbacks, money laundering, and scams. One cannot expect to petty majors to behave in high esteem and have high ethos. Since 1962 debacle, the Govt of India have given free run to army to run their institution.Still these idiot blokes generals goes on looking down the civilians and authorities, just to uncontrollably monger more money. Only such things can be controlled by active involvement of Civilian power, and appropriate subordination of armed forces.

  17. @Anon 7.48 AM from your comment it seems you are the one who has never been associated with "uniformed life". Even a doorman or chaprasi also wears uniform…. wearing a uniform means nothing…but the man behind that uniform and his intentions does.
Try travelling in a Mumbai local for 4 hours or meet sales targets in a down market and you will know what stress really means. What "stress" do our men in armed forces undergo in well laid out cantonments and garrisons where their major preoccupation is with golf or free hooch and ribald jokes in the defense clubs? Stay alert for 18 hrs??? What did you smoke?? What percentage of the armed forces have to always stay alert for 18 hrs a day?? It seems you are talking out of your hat.

Whatever you say, the fact is, defense jobs are sarkari jobs where you are paid at the end of the month whether you do anything or not unlike MNC/Pvt jobs where you need to sell yourself everyday and prove your value to the organisation.

Fact is the armed forces are bloated and corrupt with tons of funds and no accountability. In a country which has the world's highest number of poor, why is the defense budget several times bigger than the budget for education and health?

  18. Anon @ 5:53 PM

Though your words are caustic.. they are true.

fauji life is all bout parties, free hooch and ribald jokes and enjoyment at govt expense.

but the imp point is, Army is Oligarchic : rule by select few.

the select few are senior ranks.. and not " majors and lt cols " ….
these ranks are the workhorses and they hve to really slog it out.. maybe in the hope of promotion or chance to enjoy the freebeis in future or potential of corruption..or plain carrier progression..

The careerist mindset is breeding worst form of servile and obsequious mentality among officers, people checking shit-pots for generals and changing bed-sheets … some people even get rewarded ( medal etc ) for it, under another reason ..

18 hrs duty is pure BS. The jawan cry if put daily on duty for daily 6 ( 2 hour shifts X 3 ) hour duty at night, where they get to sleep the rest of time.

yes, few people hve to rough it out in siachin.. i think, that is less than 0.01 % of army, rest are busy in sycophancy and servitude towards the masters….

the sahayak is most misued by generalship, who use 100 odd people at their residences for garden and administartive duties… a major/lt col will have one sahayk.. and most ( not all ) dont misuse them.or illtreat them, bcoz of fear of senior officers.

well, what happned in this case is ,
suman ghosh ( again a bengali ) was a barber ( not sahayak ), he went inside the offrs resi, knowing the lady was bathing…
I think, the husband did whatever he did for his honour or the concept thereof, which anyone wud do.
yes, that barber shud hve been treated and punished ( if guilty ) and not man-handled .. but in such circumstances, anyone can get angry and loose cool..
this is not a sahayak issue and young officers do not have so many privileges to be misused.

Mod: kindly post it, dont delete it, like last post.

  19. Right, let's put our heroes who know so much about services life in the frontline. Preferably in a bunker on the frontline, Siachen for starters, with pithoo parade every morning. Probably they would go crawling back to mama, mewling like kittens. Actually, the poor stiffs who commute 4 hrs a day in suburban second class would fare better in the services than the petulant dukhiyas bellyaching from their airconditioned cars about how life in the forces is all mazaa and no sazaa.

  20. @Anon 9.49 PM

This incident happened in front of several officers and soldiers at the front in icy conditions of ladakh during an artillery firing exercise.

I don't understand how and where under such circumstances, was our Memsahib taking a "bath" and the need of our Brahmin Major (Sharmaji) to "defend" the honor of his wife whose "modesty" had been compromised by a "Bangali Barber's" peekaboo which in turn led to a free for all and a Marathi Lt Col getting bashed up by the same Brahmin Major and his cohorts????

Man your story is so stupid it defies belief.

Shiv: Pls allow this post even though I have used some extreme words.

  21. Shameful!…for so many Major rank and above officers to engage in such behavior is deplorable and shows the world the elitist mentality our armed forces operate under. Why no lieutenant or Captains involved? Because they at least are on the ground and working day to day with the enlisted personnel so their heads are still firmly on the ground and not flying in the air like their senior tent and desk jockey commanders….sack the lot and be done with it. Leave the enlisted men alone…none of this is their fault and those poor souls have everything to lose.

  22. @ Praetorian

I think when your mother is Peeka-boo'ed and then rammed by a Porki Pathan… u will get the answer for the Brahmin Major's honour.

Asshole, where does religion or talking trash bout a lady come in?

If you are so fond of sleaze, post some pics of your incest-filled mind.

coming back to the point, the real story is different, it will come sooner or later… just bcoz a reporter posted a story, it mustnt be true ( atleast 100% )

till that time, control your vulgar thoughts and release then in the confines of your family (only )

** and yes, as the same dispensation for Shri Praetorian,

This post may also be allowed please !

  23. @Anon 6.39 PM

All your volley of abuses still doesn't answers where was your memsahib doin a "Ram Teri Ganga Maili" a la Mandakini to be precise? On the firing range in front of Majors, Sepoys and Sahayaks while all the guns were booming or in the bathroom which happened to be so large that could accommodate entire artillery regiment and the brawl that ensued?

  24. @Anon 8.44 AM

Right, let's swap roles. I will live in a "bunker" in the front, wearing imported winter clothes, relishing on instant heating chicken tikkas and chocolates doin' desh ki suraksha and "sacrificing my youth" whereas you travel daily at least for 4 hours packed like sardines in Mumbai's malodorous Borivali Superfast local and your lunch, dinner and breakfast will be one single misal pav or vada pav washed down with "Energy milk" from Aarey's dudhalaya.Weekends you may get a bottle of maaza for all the saaza.

90% of your salary will be "variable" which will be given in the form of "incentives". 30% of what you get will be deducted "at source" by our socialist and secular "Govt of India" to pay blokes like me in the front "sacrificing my life for the country" and for the free hooch to lift my spirits.

  25. Man…

where is the option of "LIKE" here..
    Facebook has spoiled Us 😛

    Prateroien ki toh le lei…

btw, prateroian, i support the sorting out of bad and corrupt elements in fauj.. but your language is filth.. dont use it.

u can say,,,, what you want to say…in less "extreme" words .

  26. Dear "relishing on instant heating chicken tikkas and chocolates doin' desh ki suraksha" hero. First, please try getting selected for the forces. They won't pick just anyone. Second, the reason someone is eating "instant heating chicken tikkas" [could someone please serve this person a sample of what he thinks is such fine cuisine so that he actually has some idea of what he is talking about?] on the frontier is so that people like you get to make choices in life. Soldiers are leading a "luxurious" life wearing "imported winter clothing" at 18,000 feet in all seasons so that clueless civilians can keep living a clueless life. You can *choose* to work in a sales job or you can do something else. That is good, that is what civilian life is supposed to be. Peace should be the default setting of every nation but you need a strong military to maintain that setting. Enjoy the choices you have the freedom to make, because someone at the border is ensuring that you have the liberty to do so, the freedom to complain about the career choices you made. Someone has to live a "spoilt and pampered life" doing field exercises in the burning May sun and in freezing December snow so that people like you can work your butts off for your own *personal* ambitions and *personal* financial goals with full liberty to complain about the stress brought on by your hard work to achieve those aims.

  27. is travelling in local trains is that tideous job…….lmao!!!!
Bhai, kaha se aaya hai tu.
Then a rickshaw puller leads a more stressfull life than you man.
90% of salary in variables…..leave that job, they are fooling you.TU ek exam de aur sub inspector k naukri kar k dekh

  28. Seriously Man…

Comparing Army offr to Borivali wala 90% Variable job is like comparing Mrs G with Rakhi sawant 😛

jaare achee walee maarna, and yes.. rickshaw wala ( auto ) earn 1200/- rs per day…

dnt believe me, check yesterdays TOI.

  29. Modrator :

    kar diya na kida..
if u maderate the comments.. ur blog is dead.. no hits 🙁

not far too many takers for ur falcon n naval warship imports…

if u allow one person to comment @ protrian, then allow everybody..

    mod maaat kaar yaar :X

  30. the officers use the soldiers as " mundoos" when in peace staitons.. the govt vehicles r miused by officers families.. u can c the mundoos taking a dog or the babies for stroll.. when in front areas these officer are a fraifd of the mundoos..
