Deal For 42 More Su-30MKIs Signed

HAL Statement: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a contract for 42 numbers of Su-30 MKI frontline Fighter Aircraft with the Ministry of Defence and Russian firm Rosoboronexport in New Delhi today.  “HAL’s total responsibility for this supersonic multirole aircraft has now gone up to 222. This will further boost our confidence and operations as we have already delivered 119 Su-30 aircraft to the Air Force.  We will continue to contribute to the country’s defence preparedness”, says Dr. R. K. Tyagi, Chairman, HAL. The deal was inked by Dr. Tyagi on behalf of HAL with the Ministry of Defence.  Mr. S. Subramanyan, Managing Director of HAL’s MiG Complex signed the contract with Mr. A. A. Mikheev, Deputy General Director of Rosobornexport.
157 Indian vendors are involved in providing 13,350 components of the aircraft while another 19,450 components are manufactured at HAL’s Nasik and Koraput Divisions, adds Dr. Tyagi.
The Su-30 MKI project provides solid platform to indigenous manufacturing and technical competence creating hundreds of direct and indirect jobs. HAL’s hand-holding with private entrepreneurs has also ensured creation of strong infrastructure and quality avionics products.
Su-30 MKI is a two-seater, highly manoeuvrable, supersonic, multirole aircraft for day and night operations in all weather conditions. The aircraft is fitted with two turbojet AL-31FP engines and is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics from Russian, Western and indigenous sources.
The project has enabled HAL to master niche technologies of aircraft building and absorb new technologies in manufacturing areas like machining, forming, welding, assembly, testing and aircraft system checks. The aircraft airframes are made at Nasik, engines at Koraput, accessories at Hyderabad (communication and navigation), hydraulic, pneumatic and fuel aggregates and instruments at Lucknow and avionic displays and INGPS at Korwa. Overhauling and repairs of Su-30 MKI have already commenced in the dedicated lines set up at Nasik.

  1. Congratulations!!!

    However, I have one question.
Are these going to be the Super Sukhois?
Because it doesn't make any sense to me to get the new
    birds with older technologies and
then again invest money for upgrading them.

  2. Only technology you get from TOT is how to fasten screws, bolts and rivets. It's a shame that we continue to call TOT as a positive move. It's dumbing us down even further. All these decades of TOT has not even delivered a proper assembly line for Tejas.

  3. Shiv Sir,

A year back I read in the Outlook magazine that an Indian Firm writes the C++ software that powers the computers on-board the SU-30MKI. I do not seem to recall the name of the Firm, if you have an idea or know the name of the Firm then please do tell me.

    Thanks.

  4. HAL is only good for blowing its own trumpet. What niche technologies in assembling and manufacturing are they boasting about. Frankly they can't even put up a state of the art assembly line for the Tejas fighter aircraft and roll out more than 2 (yes, a miserable two) aircraft with screw driver technology that they have absorbed after assembling CKD foreign aircrafts, mainly Russian ones.

Their inability to produce a decent trainer aircraft for the IAF has culminated in acquiring those basic trainers from Switzerland.

Shame on HAL. High time this inefficient monolith of a PSU is dismantled into different categories with the infusion of private modern manufacturing processes.

Next they would be blowing their horns about their technical competence in building the FGFA.

Hello HAL, while you are busy patting your own backs, the Chinese are already producing 5th generation fighter/bomber aircraft!

Talk less and learn to deliver cutting edge defense products on or before their due dates.

  5. Why don't these headless people buy in increments of forties instead of buying in hundreds….politicians want to make money at regular intervals for them…nobody cares for saving the country

  6. Su30mki by Hal has lot of reliability issues compared to the knocked down unit from Russia. We should just buy it directly buy it from Russia.

  7. @Pakis You guys are being so butthurt about it that its actually hilarious. Su-30 Mki is an excellent 4.5 gen fighter and dominates it generation. Addition is nice since there are delays in developing our own platform. Yeah we can buy amazing fighter planes. We dont have to beg to China for Junk Fighter 17 which even Tejas is more than capable of defeating with ease.

  8. I thought the HAL claimed that it has the ability to build 100% of the SU30MKI indigenously. Is HAL a blatant lier? or are these advance version of the SU30? Mr Shiv please throw some light on this issue.

  9. The 2013 is the deciding year for HAL. If they fail to get the HJT in the air they are finished. Mahindras and TATAs will be preferred for future projects. I hope they work round the clock to retain their honour.

  10. Waste of tax payers money on Russian junk. Tomorrow's war will be unconventional war fought in villages and cities with enemies that blend with civilians. It will be a war fought with intelligence, connectivity and mobility, not with these 1990s masterpieces.

  11. These Super Sukhois were neccessary keeping in mind the fact that MMRCA deal is likely to be delayed even further or could be curtailed by half. the Super Flankers would act as a strong deterrant against any type of Chinese aggression in future.it wont be surprising if the MoD opts for more SU-30s incase there is no consensus reached on the Rafale and the deal is scrapped
