The ship has advanced stealth features, which make it less vulnerable to detection by enemy radar and will be fitted with state-of-the-art weapon systems which include the supersonic BrahMos surface-to-surface missile, the LRSAM Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile and the MFStar multi-function radar system providing accurate data on surface and air targets. In addition, the ship’s close-range defence capability will be boosted by four AK-630 rapid-fire guns and a Medium Range gun. The ships will also be fitted with indigenously developed twin-tube torpedo launchers and anti-submarine rocket launchers, the NPOL developed Humsa-NG hull-mounted sonar, and two multi-role helicopters adding punch to the ship’s anti-submarine capability. The maximum speed of the ship is above 30 knots.
The destroyer will be launched using the pontoon-assisted launch technique, to be employed for the first time in the history of indigenous warship building. This technique helps in overcoming slipway/draft constraints and permits launching of heavier vessels.

What type of LRSAM will it have ?
If I am not mistaken that system is still in development
sahi hai bheedu!
For a ship of this displacement, it seems to be lightly armed. Apart from 16 VLS Anti-ship/Land attack Brahmos, there should have been space for 24 1000-1500Km Nirbhay LACMs.
Just one of these ships if parked off the shores of a nation should be able to send shivers down the enemy's spine, by virtue of the sheer firepower it could deploy.
What a Beautiful ship.
The stealth features seem to be in the league of the Shivalik Class, and better than the Talwar and certainly much better than the Delhi class.
Kolkata and Kochi. What is the third one called?
Kakinada 😉
The third is INS Chennai .
pontoon-assisted launch will allow 50% completed ship to be launched unlike 30% in the past. So INS Kochi will be just over 3000 tons at launch.
Cool stealth ship. Thank you for bringing this report.
Any news on the P-15B?
although the destroyer is impressive can it counter the threat from the pakistani navy's AGOSTA-90b's torpedoes ????
also this destroyer will be blown apart if it dares to come anywhere near the U-214 of pakistan
Shiv, have you noticed how many in the media is calling it as an induction or commissioning instead of a launch.
Lol P15B may be Bengaluru class and P15C may be Chennai class
Hi Can you post an article showing the defence strengths of India and China
Pakistan doesn't have U-214's and Agostas are inferior to Indias Scorpenes.
Just becuase Agostas have AIPS, doesnt make them lethal, since almost all Indias subs have AIPS.
China > India
U214…what U214..paksitan has U214? hahahahahahaha..first get them then yap.
When is the commissioning date of INS Kolkata ?? was launched in 2006……………………Also, INS Kochi commissioning date is what – 2012 ????
sparrow's brain > vincent's brain
Seriously, INS Kolkata has still not been commissioned. I really hope we accelerate the pace of launch and commissioning of the three Kolkata class destroyers
I hope India starts designing stealth nuclear battleship cruiser with long range land attack cruise missiles and long range>>300Km antiship missile missiles.
Shiv,is Naval establisment even thinking about designing ships like america DDG class destroyers
Shiv any news about INS SHIVALIK
MDL has just one wet basin which was thus far occupied by 3 P17 frigates. Now that I think 2 P17 frigates are out on testing, INS Kolkata and INS Kochi will finally get a birth in the wet basin for fitting out. INS Kochi which will get a pontoon-assisted launch and is 50% complete is probably more ready than INS Kolkata which was launched 30% complete and has been just waiting since then.
to anonymous above,
r u sure, d 2nd frigate is also on test trials or is it speculation?? (I herd it would go 4 trials in 2010)
if so wen will 3rd frigate go 4 trials?
also wen r d destroyers expected d go 4 trials??
Building 8-9 destroyers/frigates
every 10 years is not enough. We should have a fleet of at least 40-50 of these type of ships.
don't get in a hurry for a launching your native cities name kolkata christened for new stealth destroyers of india…it seems tht u comment it on tht way….the government and the navy or the builders are the one's who decides launching ins kolkata, kochi and chennai………..
INDIA SHOULD LOOK FOR AEGIS DESTROYER TECHNOLOGY AND LCS(LITTROL COMBAT SHIP)WHICH THE NAVY HAS ALREADY UNDERTAKEN ITS STUDIES…..INDIA MUST ALSO FIND IT'S OWN NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR FUTURE BATTLESHIPS…..
