Accident Aboard Indian Kilo-Class Sub, Sailor Killed

An accident involving the battery compartment on the Indian Navy’s INS Sindhurakshak (S63) Kilo-class submarine, docked at Visakhapatnam, has left one sailor dead. The crew of the submarine has conducted full repairs and the boat is reported to be fine — it will shortly depart on deployment in the Indian Ocean. The Sindhurakshak was commissioned in 1998 and was the second-last Kilo to be commissioned. The Navy has not yet released details of the sailor who tragically lost his life in today’s accident. My condolences to the sailor’s family and the Navy.

  2. Do the submarine batteries give of dangerous fumes when they are serviced? There is also the possibility of electrocution because of the electrical equipment around.

Are these lead acid batteries? Or are they more advanced?

My deep condolences to the departed. but for your information i must tell u all that during charging of batteries, as it is an normal routine, hydrogen is generated. which is monitored by sensors, which are most commonly faulty now-a -days. just on the name of indegenization we are procuring junks from open market and price of this greediness is being paid by our brave soldiers.one must visit submarines during navy week celebrations held in mumbai and visakhapatnam, to realize hardship faced by submariners,. at last again my deep condolences to the departed as I AM ALSO AN EX SUBMARINER.
