EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS: LCA Tejas At Leh Circa. 2008

Just received this fantastic batch of photos taken during the Leh trials of the LCA Tejas in December 2008. Posted a couple of photos at the time, but don’t know if these have been seen before.

  1. good pics …. I hope it is capable of defending the country from hostile airforces …

I just saw the pics of Lavi fighter jet that Israel cancelled production due to lack of funds the Lavi fighter looks very good maybe HAL can reproduce the Lavi as advanced model of our Tejas in future…

  2. Hey Anonymous – do you realize that the Israeli Lavi is just an iteration of the US F16? Did you read the wikipedia link that you posted? The LCA is a way more capable aircraft that is built from the ground up by India.

  3. @ Anonymous said… maybe HAL can reproduce the Lavi as advanced model of our Tejas

BAD NEWS THE CHINESE HAVE ALREADY BEATEN US IN THAT RACE CHECK OUT THE LINK CLOSLEY J-10 R&D WAS BASED ON LAVI

GOOD NEWS BECAUSE IT NEVER GOT COMPLETED MANY THINGS WERE NEVER INCLUDED

THE SECOND PICTURE OF THE LCA IS CUTE I WOULD LIKE TO RENAME THE PLANE SPARROW HAWK OR STORM ALSO LOOKS LIKE A MIX OF MIG-21+MIG23+MIRAGE+JAG

  4. Looks awesome..it does look like LCA means business in the airforce colors and taking off from leh..any more pics of LCA firing weapons..just seen one on net where it fires an air to air missle..should have more pics of weapon firing LCA to drive fear in the heart of rivals..
btw Lavi wasnt cancelled..it was so good when it was being devloped that Uncle SAM forced Israel not to produce it as it would have affected F16 sales and LAVI was using some US aid/technology..its rumoured tht Isralis passed the design to China and some of the j series fighters r based on Lavi..which China is now selling to Iran..ironical for Israel..But world has move 30 yrs since lavi was being devloped so may not be as good now.

  5. sometimes the stupidity of anons here beggars belief.

you want HAL to produce the much much inferior Lavi(since it is based on much older tech) as 'future' of the Tejas ?
you want to produce a completely different fighter as the future of another fighter ? are you mad ?
    what does even mean ?

people like you have so low sense of self-worth that you think anything produced in India in automatically inferior to foreign produced items, even if that country is somalia !
wake up and smell the coffee, our aeronautical industry is much more developed than israels, there can be no comparison between lavi and tejas.

  6. dear friends , I do not underestimate the Indian technological prowness in making the LCA ….As for the design of LCA much still needs to be done because the LCA has very limited payload capacity and incase it comes under hostile fire there may not be enough time for the pilot to eject out as the LCA would be dessimated instantly due to its small size and composite materials ….
when the enemy fighters are bigger and carry lethal weapons the LCA should be in the same category with lethal punch which is why I sugessted the Lavi for our IAF …. just the mainframe of Lavi design with composite materials and all the stuff which LCA uses

  7. can it take off from Leh carrying a meaningful load of weapons, fuel and sensors or does it suffer from the "short leg" syndrome like the migs.

  8. LCA is good project … but I have some reservations when it comes to its combat capability against enemy fighters ….. the DRDO needs to upgrade the mainframe and integrate datalink capability with larger payloads and airsuperiority …
What engines are the LCA using currently ?

  9. is not a question of self esteem here …. I am merely looking at a the product in a neutral way and see the strengths and weakness of LCA …. I want constructive dialogue not moronish talk ….

What are the chances of LCA faring against F16 Blk 52 or the J10 & J17 fighters ? I want airsuperiority fighter not just defence fighter …. remember the best defence is attack aggressively …..

  10. LCA is a good plane needs some tinkering to make it a world class fighter ….. like Gripen NG …

I would love the DRDO to get the mainairframe of Lavi – Israel or the Gripen NG and make it of the same composites and electronics that LCA usesit would prove lethal combination …..

  11. Theres a reason its called LCA…coz its exactly that..not an air superiority fighter…..not a heavy bomber…..

  12. Morons, who always believe that anything imported is better than indigenous product, so they want to modify gripen or lavi.

What these idiots fail to realize is that the requirements for LCA was driven by IAF, not ADA. The IAF knows what it wants, and if it doesn't meet the requirements, they will say so. They are happy with LCA and are already planning for Mk-II.

Even the Gripen and F-16 didn't suddenly appear as it looks today. It went through multiple iterations and revision, based on feedback from users. Same will be the case with LCA, as the IAF starts using it more and gives feedback to the developers. This will also build up the indigenous industry, and all the money will be spent within the country, instead of spending thousands of crores to enrich foreign manufactureres.

If you don't build something, and learn from its mistakes, then you will never develop anything on your own. Look at how Gripen A/B/C/D developed, and compare their specs to the NG version. Similarly, look at how the F-16 has evolved over 25 years, or F-18 from A/B version to E/F.

People come up with ridiculous ideas of replacing part A or B with composite etc, and don't realize how long it takes to do even that.

For those doubting the capabilities of LCA, only two of the MRCA contenders cleared the Leh trials with meaningful load according to many report. One can clearly see LCA taking off with two drop tanks and two AA missiles.

IAF knows what it wants, and that is why it is so closely involved with the LCA program. They are driving the requirements, and in cases where they feel improvements can be made, they are pushing it. Hence the search for new engine etc.

Please read Air Marshal Philip Rajkumar's book on the LCA to understand how much experience Indian industry has gained by going in for the LCA.

  13. Ohhh man, I am loving it!!!! My favorite a/c was Black bird. bt now i dont have to look to the west, thanks to the efforts of ADA,drdo.

  14. which fighters cleared the MCRA tests at LEH ?

I understand that IAF has certain needs and that is why the LCA program is there …. also the LCA project took a longer than expected time to develop and get inducted into the IAF …. I believe as you suggested newer versions might look and perform better there is room for improvement …..

  15. Nice! Looks like they plucked the eye balls of a collosal squid and put them on LCA. That may help LCA see better in the dark. Very nice.

  16. I cannot even express shock at the utter foolishness that some guys are displaying here "Mainframe" or that the LCA has less payload or that it will disintegrate because its built of composites..wow..I guess IT engineers should stick to their line of specialisation and leave mechanical engineering to others. Otherwise they just show their shocking ignorance of facts.

  17. @ Anonymous 12:49 AM

Haha…..well said..and when I pointed this out in a different manner they called me "sub standard
    "

  18. GE 414 engines for the MKII LCA …hope they start rolling them of the production line soon….I feel our country needs every single fighter jet and pilots to counter the threat from Chinese and PAK airforces becos looks like this time INDIA will be fighting a war on two fronts …. so we need all the jets we can lay our hands on to defend the country
