Indian Navy Statement: On 05 Sept, while on anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden, Indian Navy destroyer INS Delhi successfully neutralised a pirate boat while escorting merchant vessels. INS Delhi deployed in the Gulf of Aden since mid-July 2010 was escorting 12 merchant vessels including Jag Ratan, an Indian Flag merchant vessel. At about 1215h on 05 Sept in a position 180-km north of the Somali Coast, in the International Recommended Transit Corridor, a boat was detected approaching the formation at high speed. INS Delhi immediately and repeatedly called the boat on Mercantile Marine Radio but the boat failed to respond to these calls. Sensing that the boat may pose a risk to ships being escorted, INS Delhi safely maneuvered the formation of merchant ships away and intercepted the boat. A helicopter was launched to provide aerial cover to the merchant vessels and the boat “Bareeda” was successfully intercepted, forced to stop and boarded by a team of Marine Commandos from INS Delhi. On investigation a cache of arms and several fuel drums and ship boarding equipment were found. There were 07 Somali and 01 Yemeni national as part of the crew. The men were disarmed and excess fuel on the boat was disposed off by the boarding team.
Since the Indian Navy started it’s anti-piracy operations in Oct 2008, over 1,200 ships have been escorted. This is the 16th piracy attack that has been prevented and not a single ship under escort of Indian Navy has fallen prey to pirates.

BZ!!Keep the flag flying high. Our commandos need better head gear.
Would like to know what kind of follow-up action is taken on the captured pirates or the country harboring/originating/promoting these pirates. Are they captured, imprisoned, tried and prosecuted, and if so how and where; or are they just let off. Also, is the originating country dealt with by an international coalition. After all there has to be some structured mechanism. This kind of policing can not be expected to go on in perpetuity. There is a cost to it. Or is UN failing and falling apart.
They should send a word that Indian vessel n crews should be off limits, otherwise we will come back to get you.
That way save on combustibles!
pleae propagate this as much as possible………..let the world know of our achievements……
Ooh, those pirates look scary… especially that old guy. Not.
Is this even remotely an appropriate use of INS Delhi and her warfighting capabilities? This is a more task for the Coast Guard for heaven's sake. Wonder what the operation to grab a fishing boat and handful of AK-47s cost. Ridiculous.
Somali Priates Kaa socha " Ki INS Delhi chup rehega, chori karne dega,Unhe dekh kar bhag jayega". Somali Pirates ayye the shikari banne khud shikar ho gaye"
3 Cheers to our MARINE Commmandos.
Good going by Indian Navy.
Our commandos needs more sophistication.
they don't look like commandos, look like poorly equipped jawans.
The MARCOS – Marine Commandos are one of the top five Special forces in the world. Unlike other special forces like the SEALS or the SGS or the SAS, MARCOS carry what is necessary to neutralize the enemy. This makes their moves and speed more precise. When their MP5 coughs its a assured kill. Such is their precision and training. BRAVO MARCOS. As your motto goes – YOU ALWAYS DARE AND ALWAYS WIN

well..u hear about multimillion $ ransom demands…these are how they start..a couple of these tiny boats ..and not so scary looking men….
For the national business interests, Navy must keep patrolling in the Indian ocean and Chino sea.
A yemen national?
Hmmm, was he important by any chance?
Like an Al-Qaida terrorist for example.
These terrorists have major bases in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, and they commute between these three lawless countries and their vast unmonitored coastlines using small dhows and skiffs. Or its a drug smuggling op.
Nice to see the Delhi let loose her CIWS guns on the offloaded fuel drums.
The commando's look under nurished. Is this a problem in the navy?
@monkey-business 7:17 ,the problem is not with the Indian navy.Probably with your boyish or gay fantasies of muscle bound hunks a la some Hollywood flick.
Let the real professionals do their job in real life, whilst you revel in your armchair fantasies.
Monkey,
The looks dont count here. MARCOS are not hulks or Rambos. What matters here is they are cut out for any mission that they are asked to do. Each marcos is a live ninja. So count on looks
It's their grueling training that makes them loose all puppy fat and makes them look lean and mean. I have seen what one slap from these lean men can do to ordinary men. Where you have to walk miles in desert or marshes without food and water, you cannot afford to have a hefty body. A Stallone or Arnold won't last more than few days with their bulky body.
Like your name Monkey Business your idea of a commando is what you see in movies which is diagonally opposite to real life commandos.
G/day,
The INS DEHLI looks great to bad about the uniforms for the poor cammandoes, when at sea I dont think green cammo is the way to go…Maybe they should of gone the black or blue cammo or something.
And another thing symbolisim counts, When you are on station for the world to see you might want to pay attention to the little things. Rule one of force projection is PROJECT…Please give the guys fitted body armour / helmets, knee/arm pads, thigh side arms and all the rest, I am sure they are more then capable and they look good except for the moes, so give em the gear to look capable. When I see the Australian coast guard or navy board a foreign boat etc they go in serious.
Now feel free to slam me as that is what we Indians love 10/4 out from down under.
@Anon 06:08,
Us armchair generals have the liberty to fantasize what we want. The stuff or Geardo looks very stylish and glamorous. War and combat is hardly that. The enemy is neither overawed nor intimidated by how you look. Otherwise the Taliban in Afghanistan would have long surrendered to the Americans.Leave the fighting to the professionals. The MARCOS operate in a hot humid atmosphere,on a heaving and pitching dingy, they will have to jump on to the pirate boats. They have to be ready for any swift movement and at any time they may have to dive into or may be thrown into the sea in the course of action. You do not want kilos and kilos of extra equipment to weigh you down then.Light and swift movement is the key to such ops.Its a high visibility op,the destroyer has flagged down the pirate boat. What kind of Camo the guys wear has little role in such ops.Visibility and force intimidation is the key here. When stealth is required, the guys will operate accordingly.Do not forget that the Indian forces have been engaging sundry jehadis, mujaheddin long long before the west discovered the war on terror.
Amazing read to see all the "armchair generals" together with their assuming heights of judgment. Wonder how would a real commando see these comments; would he be not amused!
