EXCLUSIVE: The View From Super-Carrier Roosevelt

Among those who got a chance to visit ‘Rough Rider’ USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN71) in the Bay of Bengal over the weekend for Exercise Malabar 2015 was MoD spokesperson Sitanshu Kar, a man who, as you’ve seen here before, is more than handy with a camera. He’s made available a fabulous set of photographs he took from on board the super carrier, exclusive to Livefist.

  1. Why is our 45,000 tonne Russian miracle (INS Vikramaditya) not participating in this exercise along with her MiG 29K's? Nearly going to be 2 years in service now in the IN, so can't say they are not integrated with the IN yet.

Wait a minute…did 7 out of 8 boilers conk off again?? Or did the notorious failure rate of the RD-33 engine put the MiG 29K's out of action?? Or are our Navy pilots still not confident of taking off and landing on the Vikramaditya outside training mode??

This was a golden opportunity to learn and exercise with the USN for INS Vikramaditya and her aircraft……

    1. (1) the Indian pilots have successfully landed and taken off from the flight deck of vikramaditya. Also, they have been trained in Russia to fly the 29k's.
Vikramaditya is still being completely understood by the naval crew and is undergoing refit due to which I couldn't participate in the exercise.

  2. INS Vikrmaditya has gone for refit so not available ……… I think Indians doen't want to upset Russia as lot of sensors and ECM suite are Russian and US would have known their exact capability.

  3. @Guru

Having an Aircraft-Carrier doesn't mean you have to pratice it with a another navy.Every exercise have different missions under which the navy have to practice.
Such exercises are not conducted for glory purposes or to boast about the weapons they have.
